What an amazing place!
My brother and I took a trip here in February 2008. We are Dutch, but live in England. Basically all of our family, comes from the south of The Netherlands, and so we had never taken a trip up to the North, until now!

We flew into Amsterdam, and then took the train, straight into Groningen Centraal.

It was really easy to get to, and not as expensive to have a week in, as say Amsterdam, or Rotterdam. The people were lovely, and we made some amazing friends!

The architecture is wonderful, typically Dutch, and very beautiful. The place doesn't seem too touristy, and people are genuinely happy to see that you have come to visit this fairly unknown city. I found it to be very friendly, and very Dutch. this sounds strange, but if you want to see the real Holland, you need to get out of places like Amsterdam, and visit smaller places like Groningen, which are off the beaten track a bit.

The Night life in Groningen, is also good. There are many, clubs, bars and restaurants for you to visit, and have a good time. The shopping is lovely, and if you get a chance, you should visit the Grote maarkt on market day. There are plenty of stalls to keep you interested.

A great place to go for some food, is De Goudkantoor. This is a restaurant which offers good food, and lovely local beer, (although you have to ask for the beer.)
It is also situated in an amazing old building, that you could just stare at all day long!

If you can get out of the city and see the countryside, then this is a must! It is very picturesque, and I feel that both the city of Groningen, and the province of Groningen, are overlooked European destinations, that you should go and visit, if you get the chance!

Summary: Wonderful place to visit! I would go back in a second if i could!
