Newest Review: ... was hired to whip them!! No RSPCA in 1300! The funniest thing that happened in Haarlem was when we visited a Rib house for our dinner. Everyone was being served platters of ribs or steak of Desperate Dan type proportions. My friend who is a vegetarian asked rather timorously for a vegetarian option. The waiter drew himself up to his full 6 foot five and said. "Madame. You would ask for a condom in a nunnery??" He did her a cheese omelette. We laughed all evening. Our hotel Franz Hals was central and very comfortable. The staff were helpful and humorous and insisted we had full breakfasts with doggy bags instead of the continenta... more

Haarlem is a beautiful city standing about 20 kilometres outside the more famous city of Amsterdam. New York was originally called New Haarlem by the Dutch settlers there. I prefer the old Haarlem for a friendly, humorous and inspiring visit. Everywhere appeared to be invalid friendly as a matter of course. The Dutch are very concerned with and demonstrative of equal chances for everyone. Now the people of Haarlem have got to be some of the best cooks in the world. Everywhere we ate, the food was tasty, fresh, reletively inexpensive (18-35 euros), and plentiful. No wonder they are are so tall and healthy looking. I visited the Corrie Ten ...
