The small town has all normal amenities but it's clear from the moment you step off the dolmus (turkish multi-person taxi services in minibuses) that the focus is on the ruins. I visited Harran, a couple of years ago. It is located in "Kurdistan" as the Kurds call it but is considered officialy Turkey on a map, it is located 44km south east of Sanliurfa, very close to the Syrian border. Harran is a very ancient city that was a major Mespotamian city, lieing on the crossroads where the old routes from Damascus and Nineveh (ancient city near today's Mosul in Iraq) and Carchemish (another ancient city to the west, straddling the Turkish/Syrian border south of Gaziantep). The city was mentioned as far back as 1200BC and is mentioned both in the bible and quran, supposedly Abraham lived here and Adam and Eve also came through ... Read the complete review
