Advantages: hot, quiet, beautiful
Disadvantages: bugs
Fiji is a beautiful country. It has a lot to offer as a tropical paradise, as it has amazingly beautiful golden beaches with crystal clear blue sea where you can get up close and personal with the marine life. It is also very secluded and quiet on the islands so you can enjoy a quiet getaway to relax and chill out.
I arrived at Nadi airport, which was small, chaotic and hot in the middle of the afternoon. After eventually getting my bags, we met up with the driver from our hostel and he brought us the short distance to the (infamous for all backpackers) Nadi bay Hotel. Great place to meet people, so if you are on your own go hear. We had booked to go on the Feejee Experience the next day so we wandered around Nadi, which is all hustle and bustle for the first day. To e honest there is not a lot to keep you hear, but is an ok base to start from.
Our Feejee Experience took us round the island on a loop, so we got to experience some real life Fijians, living a hard and difficult existence. We drank kava with some local tribesmen up in the rainforest and played rugby with some schoolchildren. It was an amazing experience and would recommend doing the Feejee Experience if you go. We also did sandboarding and billirafting down a river, as well as a trek through the rainforest, following by drifting down the river on blown up tyre rings. Unforgettable.
We then took the big yellow Yasawa Flyer up the Yasawa islands where we stayed on 3 or 4 different islands. These islands were so secluded that at the end of the day there were maybe 20 people in total on the island, so you really got some time to be alone and relax here - and read! The resorts were basic enough, but the food was always fresh and well presented.
I would recommend Fiji, as it was not too expensive, the people were very friendl and welcoming into their homes, villages and lives. It was very very hot when we were there and there were a lot of bugs in the rainforest.
Obviously it would be very expensive to go for a holiday to Fiji, but we stopped there on the way back from New Zealand, as part of our Round the World ticket, which was £850. Everything was pretty cheap when on the island though.
Definitely worth a visit.
Summary: Great country, great people
