Advantages: relaxing, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: not enough shade
Grand Anse Beach is in the South West Coast of Grenada. It is on the Carribean side of the Island. The other side of the island is on the Atlantic Coast and the sea there can be quite rough at times.
It is about a 10m minute drive from the capital St Georges and is reputed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the carribean. We were staying in the next bay our hotel the Rex Grenadian was suituated at Pink Gin Beach. I just love that name.
Anyway I digress. we went to Grand Anse Beach where the departure point for the Whale and Dolphin watching tour set off from. What impressed me was the white sands and the clear turqoise water. If you like snorkelling it has the perfect conditions, although it is not my cup of tea.
The beach is about 2 miles long and the majority of the hotels are here. More on them later.
If you are a watersports lover, there is everything to tempt you water-skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving. The area off Grand Anse is used by divers from all over the world and from the depths of the sea are able to marvel and the coral reef, exotic fish and maybe even glimpse a turtle or two.
The dive centre at Grand Anse Beach is called Dive Grenada and is located in the Flamboyant hotel.
Just up from the beach past the hotels still in Grand Anse there is a shopping mall. The only air conditioned one on the island!!
There are a wide variety of shops there
Real Value Supermarket
Cimpex - Department Store
Mr Bulk - Candy
Gittens Duty Free - Perfumes
The Wine Shoppe
Adonis - Mens' Clothing
Grenada Cooperative Bank
Magical Dreams - Toys
Game World
Linens and Things
Pssst Boutique - Souvenirs, clothing, indonesian furniture
Although to be honest none of them are anything to write home about. The only thing I purchased was some water in the supermarket, so your money is safe there girls.(but not if you go to Columbian Emeralds in the capital!!!)
There are a number of nice restuarants although the only one I visited was the Aquarium. (fab food)
The beach is full of vendors selling items such as sea shells, spices(its not called the Spice Island for nothing).. and T shirts .You can even have your nails manicured.
The area is not overdeveloped there is only a handful of hotels situated on the Beach.
Spice Island Beach Resort 7 NiGHTS FROM £1400.
Some of the rooms even have their own private plunge pools
Coyaba Beach Resort 7 night ai from £999
Grenada Grand Beach Resort (Virgin Holidays)
and the
Allmada Beach Resort ( £619 VirginHolidays)
I didnt really like the look of this hotel too much concrete and not very nice gardens. We walked through this hotel after our trip and I was glad I wasnt staying there)
Getting to Grenada
Fly with Virgin on Mondays
and Excel Airways on Sundays
Flying time approx 9 Hours from London Gatwick
If you get the chance visit this beautiful part of the world before too many people discover it and becomes spoilt
Summary: Paradise on the beach

- 11/08/05 Used to work with a lady from Grenada who showed me some fantastic photos of the island - would love to go there one day. However not a fan of beach "resorts" and "complexes". Fiona |
