Advantages: Warm and very friendly people
Disadvantages: Greek night was rubbish and Turkey was full of rip off merchants
Kos, Greece
I spent a two week holiday in Kos, Greece in 2007. I went with my girlfriend and the only reason we choose Kos was because of the price. For two weeks bed and breakfast we paid around £700 flying from Dublin.
We stayed on the outskirts of Kos town it was about a 25 minute walk into Kos town or about a five minute walk to the nearest beach. Our resort was actually called Lambi but it's so close to Kos town they might as well be the same place.
Our original intention was to just have a nice lazy holiday and Kos fitted the bill nicely. That being said there was a lot to do and Kos harbour is really picturesque. Our hotel staff could not have been nice. They very often organised BBQs in the evening and gave everyone free food. We went to the Greece night but to be honest it was pretty rubbish we didn't stay long at all.
Our best day was the three island cruise. It was boat ride for 20 euro which stopped at three neighbouring islands. On one of the island we got a good lunch which was included in the price. The trip itself was good and the hosts went out of their way to make the day fun. The boat had loads of snorkel equipment and life jackets for less strong swimmers. At one point everyone was given a chance to steer and they also encouraged us all to dress up at pirates on the way back which was a good laugh.
Other highlights include the old ruins in the town and the close proximity to Turkey meant a crossing could be completed in 20 mins. In fact we could see Turkey from our hotel balcony.
The one thing that struck me about Kos was just how friendly everyone was. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble and the everywhere we went we got a great reception. We hired bikes the time we were there as the island is so flat its easy to cycle most places.
Another tip for travellers is that we returned to one of three islands. I think it was called Psyermos or something like that and stayed there for the night. It was a great place to stay. When everyone left there where only four tourists on the island. The locals were still there of course but it was a great experience and again we were treated really well. We had a great room. It was basic but we were able to listen to the sound of the waves all night.
I would definitely recommend Kos and given the chance I would go back tomorrow.
Summary: Kos was great. So glad I went here instead of Turkey
