Advantages: Beautiful, Cheap, Friendly locals
Disadvantages: none really
Kos as an island had alot to offer. Sun, sea, sand, history, good food, nightclubs etc... . Kos town offers you all of this, you need not venture out of the resort. We stayed in a family run hotel just on the outskirts of the town. Most of the hotels within the resort are less than five minutes walk from the beach. The accomodation was basic but comfortable, which is what you can expect from most hotels in greece. the plumbing was alot to be desired (you get given a bin for your toilet tissue), they are still using the same plumbing system we used in the 1950's. Don't think this is just the story in Kos, all of greece still uses this plumbing. However, the accomodation aside, we was hardly ever in anyhow. The beaches are faultless, clean beaches, clean and clear water. Tradesmen walk past every hour or so offering fresh pastries, some filled with feta, some with sweet fillings. We bought a snorkeling mask, and the view underwater was amazing, just like in the wildlife programs. The town itself has alot to offer. There is an abundance of restaurants to choose from, but as i am half greek, and know the lingo, i found it best to avoid all restaurant with wild decor, as they tend to rip tourists off, and we headed straight for the basic looking family run establishments. The food was wonderful, just like my aunt's in Athens, and was very cheap. If you would like to try what the locals call 'fast food', you should try a little bar in the centre of town which sells souvlakia, which are kind of like kebabs. The meat is lamb off cuts, and the bread is in between hot nan bread and pitta bread. If you ask for a 'souvlaki me pitta, me aula' this basically means a souvlki with everything. These taste out of this world, and will set you back just 30 pence each. Food aside, the town has its own historic castle, which a small entrance fee is required. There is an ancient
town(ruins) which are dotted in and about the whole town which are free. There is a fabulous harbour, and day trips to nearby islands are always on offer. The town is full of cafe's which offer fabulous drinks, at reasonable prices ( i recommend the frape). Nightclubs are in there abundance, but are concentrated in one area. There are also many cabaret bars, where you can experience an authentic 'greek night' All in all my husband and i don't stop raving about it. We went on a last minute deal for two weeks, and took £450 spending money, we came home with armfuls of presents and wonderful memories. Simply magic.
