We had been to Malta a few times, this time (May 2009) staying in a villa in a rural part of the South between Zejtun and Masascala. There is something for everybody in Malta; seaside resorts; fishing villages; lively centre of Valetta; history; countryside. If you would like a more peaceful holiday head towards the south of Malta or to the island of Gozo. Gozo can be reached via ferry from the north of Malta. You can drive from one of of Malta to the other in not much more than an hour, or if you prefer, the local buses departing from Valletta can take you to most places including the ferry terminal.

Cars are relatively cheap to rent in Malta (about £100 for a small car for a week) but the buses are very cheap. I would recommend sticking to the buses if you are staying in a resort eg St Julians; Melieha, and having a car if you are in a less lively location.

From late May throughtout the summer, head to one of the local towns or villages when their festa is on to experience the processions and fireworks. Something that shouldn't be missed.

Get the water ferry over from Sliema near Tigne seafront to Valletta to avoid being stuck on a hot bus. The service is reliable and regular and also cheap.

A trip to Marsasslokk market on a Sundat morning is a must for fish & seafood lovers.

The local people of Malta love tourists. Show them how interested you are in their country and culture and respect it and they will treat you like royalty!
