Advantages: Lots of lovely people, great food and shopping

Disadvantages: Poverty is everywhere which can be quite upsetting

I visited Marrakech with my husband and had a thoroughly enjoyable trip. I wouldn't recommend it as a holiday for those not interested in seeing the different cultures, as Morocco is extrememly different to what we are used to. Begging is rife and you can't get very far in the streets without someone asking for money, or wanting to show you something. We got caught out on the first day when we got lost and couldnt find our hotel, someone offered to show us where to go, but instead took us about a mile away to try and sell us something!! We learnt from that experiene and hired a registered tour guide for a day who took us around the city and introduced us to the locals.

The rest of the holiday was great and we were hardly harrassed at all! Marrakech has amazing places to eat and shop, we picked up great bargains on leather. The main square (Djemaa el Fna) is the meeting place for a lot of the locals, especially in the evening. You'll find a lot of street entertainers there such as snake charmers, monkeys and musciains. Within the main square there is a lot of food places, we were advised not to eat at the ones that are just put up in the evening as sometimes the food isnt cooked properly (or kept refridgerated). We knew people who did though and they said it was lovely and they didnt have an problems. Visit the medina for a shopping experience out of this world, be prepared to get lost as it is like a maze with shops everywhere. You will pick up amazing bargains though. The locals are very persistent and will want you to buy everything (they may even walk after you) but they will listen to you eventually.

If you want a day out of Marrakech and the hustle and bustle then we went to one of the private pools on the outskirts of the city. The one we went to was called Plague Rouge and was gorgeous with a massive pool, lots of chairs and lounges and food and drink. It was a lovely alternative to the city and enabled us to relax. I would also recommend doing a bus tour as you will get to see the whole city and are able to get on and off as you want to.

If you are keen on something different then Marrakech is for you!!

Summary: A lovely country with friendly people!! My tip is to hire a guide to show you around!

The reason for my low rating is that you don't tell us much about MArrakech itsself. What to see, what to do. Personally I don't mind being approached. You just need to smile and say no thanks.
