Advantages: Beautiful, never to be forgotten, village with sandy beaches.

Disadvantages: Very hilly and gets crowded during the day in peak season.

Sometimes when you think back about holidays in the sun they can often merge into one. It can be difficult to remember which was which. However, visit Lindos and you will remember it forever.

The pretty village is a photographers dream, a cluster of white washed houses that climb up a hill from a beautiful bay. The ancient ruins of the Acropolis crown the village overlooking the myriad of narrow village streets, alleyways and court yards.

Lindos is a National Historic Landmark which means that it's original character has been protected. Their are no big blocks of apartments and the locals need permission to make any changes. It therefore retains it's original charm. Many of the former fishermen's houses are now souvenir shops and bars. So it is a little commercialised but the magic remains.

There are no cars allowed in the village. Well the roads wouldn't be wide enough anyway. You can, however, get a ride on a donkey! They trot right up the hill to the Acropolis or down to one of the beaches. Personally I'd prefer to walk.

The beaches are fine sand and the sea a lovely blue. Unfortunately the beaches are covered with sun loungers so there is little room if you want to just lay on your towel.

Accommodation in the resort is quite basic often with traditional Lindian beds which are simply wooden or stone platforms with mattresses laid on top. This is why most of the major tour operators, such as Thompsons, do not operate in Lindos. The apartments and rooms are not of a high enough standard, but to me this is part of the enjoyment.

We stayed in a converted cottage with a shared courtyard where we could eat our breakfast in the sunshine. What more do you really need? The bathroom was a little 'dodgy'. There was a shower but no surround, curtain or anything. Just a hole in the floor to let the water out. So the shower splashed everything in site. We learned the hard way
to keep our toilet paper somewhere dry!

Our apartment was very clean and the Greek people are so friendly. We got to know the owners, the cleaners and just about their whole family. They all kissed us goodbye when we left. Ahhhhh!

The village is full of restaurants, all very reasonable. There are several that have open rooftop tables that overlook the Acropolis which is lit up at night. Very romantic! Especially after a couple of bottles of red wine.

Some of the places in the village to visit are:

(a) The Acropolis, of course! Superb views from the top overlooking St.Paul's Bay. This is where St.Paul is supposed to have landed. There is a lot to see if you are interested in ancient history. One tip, go very early or late afternoon to avoid all of the day trippers that flood in during the day.

(b) The church in the village center with well preserved frescoes of familiar biblical scenes, originally painted in 1779.

(c) The Theatre. The ruins of this old theatre date back to the 4th century BC.

(d) The Lindian Houses many dating back to the 17th century.

(c) The beaches, essential for a sun tan.

From the edge of the village buses run into Rhodes Town, somewhere you have to visit. Ferries also run from the beaches.

Lindos a great place! I would advise that you avoid it in the peak season as it gets very busy. I went in early June, still very hot. At the time of my visit there was plenty of vacant accommodation if you aren't too fussy. So hop on a plane, get a taxi from the airport (about £7) and find an apartment. Many have great vews. Well go on then! What are you waiting for?!
