Advantages: Lovely weather, beautiful beaches.

Disadvantages: Local culture

We chose to travel to Tunisia in November as it was ideal weather and flight length to take our baby with us.

We stayed in Port El Kantaoui at the hotel Marhaba Palace.

The hotel itself was great in all aspects other than the lack of evening entertainment.

The resort was lovely, a mild introduction to the tunisian culture. The port itself was perfect for strolling around during early evening and there seemed to be an endless choice of resturants to eat at.

Sousse however is completely different I have never been as frightened as I was when I found myself in the middle of the medina, shoulder to shoulder with the locals pushing, shoving and shouting. I was pushing my seven month old in his pushchair and strangers kept bending and kissing him. We were told later that the nationals believe it to be good luck to kiss a baby. That was no comfort to me. I had to look to the floor and be guided out of the madness by my husband.

I am fully aware that for many the hustle and bustle of the medina (market) and its narrow alleys would be a welcome thrill and excitement to some people and maybe, had I not been there with my son, I may have enjoyed Tunisia more.

I would recommend Tunisia for people who enjoy sitting by the pool and staying in the hotel and using the aminities of the local resort. You will need to be sure that there is entertainment on site though. Our hotel seriously lacked that.

I would also recommend Tunisia to people who want to do the 'tourist thing' and are comfortable with the hustle and bustle of the eastern marketplace, and are happy to (literally) be pulled into shops and made to barter for goods. Or people who are OK to be chased down the street by the local con artists claiming to work at you hotel and to know you.... they dont know you, they are playing you.

Summary: You will either Love it or Hate it
