The indigenous people of Hawaii do not consider themselves to be American. For example once I asked for a beer at the hotel bar, the first time a Hawaiian girl was serving me behind the counter, gave me the usual hawaiin greeting with a smile and simply served me my drink. The second time though was an American, who asked me for my passport to confirm my legal age. I visited this island over a couple of years ago as part of a trip touring America. Hawaii is technically part of the United States of America, but in reality is a different country with different culture and customs. Kauai is one of the islands than make up Hawaii, probably the most natural and least built up of all the islands. Kauai is extremely picturesque, however there's not really much to do so I wouldn't recommend staying for more than a week. I haven't been to any of the other islands so can't compare it.
