Advantages: Very natural island

Disadvantages: Full of just married couples

I visited this island over a couple of years ago as part of a trip touring America. Hawaii is technically part of the United States of America, but in reality is a different country with different culture and customs.

Kauai is one of the islands than make up Hawaii, probably the most natural and least built up of all the islands. Kauai is extremely picturesque, however there's not really much to do so I wouldn't recommend staying for more than a week. I haven't been to any of the other islands so can't compare it.

The indigenous people of Hawaii do not consider themselves to be American. For example once I asked for a beer at the hotel bar, the first time a Hawaiian girl was serving me behind the counter, gave me the usual hawaiin greeting with a smile and simply served me my drink. The second time though was an American, who asked me for my passport to confirm my legal age. When I asked why this was necessary she gave me the usual, "this is the United States of America" speech. So I had to waste 10 minutes getting my passport from my hotel room.

What caught my attention mostly, is the island is full of couples who have just tied the knot. For anyone who is single or divorced, visiting this island will just give you an unpleasant feeling. From waking up in the morning have breakfast at the hotel to sitting by the hotel pool to eating dinner, you will see ecstatic couples holding hands gazing at each other. This gave me a sick uncomfortable feeling. Also a single person is unlikely to find a partner on this island since they're all couples.

If you're going as a couple I highly recommend this island for everyone else stay away or you'll just find it depressing.
