Advantages: Nice looking place, very calm
Disadvantages: Not much in the way of things to do
Kazimierz Dolny is a small town in the Pulawy region of Eastern Poland, located in a valley by the meandering Wisla river, between Lublin and Pulawy.
Kazimierz Dolny is a popular tourist attraction, frequented in the summer by groups of school kids - I hadn't found time to visit it until recently when I was in the area and decided to pop along on a cold autumn's day. The population of the village is 3,500 but I imagine that a fair amount of those people work or study outside of the village as it was fairly quiet when I visited. The majority of what is around today of the villages exists from the 16th and 17th centuries when it became a trading point along the Wisla river.
There are several little cheap places to get something to eat, as well as a pub and cafe or two, most of which revolve around the picturesque main square which main focus is the rather old water pump. There is a large church "St. Nicholas's Church" looking down on the town and the ruins of a castle and a tower (entrance was about 3zl I think - though there was no one there to collect money when we visited), the view from the top down on to the idyllic village and the rather wide Wisla river is a very nice sight.
Kazimierz Dolny is easily reachable by bus from either Lublin, Naleczow or Pulawy (the cheapest option at 2.25zl - a bit more than 50p) - Pulawy is also the most convenient with the bus going directly to the train station from where you can catch a train to Warsaw or Lublin or even more far-flung destinations like Berlin and Kiev if you wish! Accomodation is available but I'm not sure of the exact prices - I saw some advertised for 40zl (8 quid) per person but I think that is a little steep and you should be able to find something for about half the price.
Despite the gentle laid back atmosphere of this town, I think it would be a bit of a boring place to stay, except for perhaps in the summer when it would be warm enough to wlak along the river and explore the region. It is more of a day-trip destination!
Summary: Day trip...
