The traffic in certain areas can also be a tad hectic, but to me that just adds to the whole beauty of the City. It remains to be a true, working, Arabic City, free from tourist intrusion. The transport system is wonderfully developed by African standards. There are buses running all over time, and generally the roads are great. Khartoum to me is what I pictured true Arabia to be, the fascinating Bazaars, romantic mosques, robed men and veiled women. There are pretty much no tourists to be seen in the centre of town, which leaves you alone to wander amongst the locals and soak up the Arabic culture. And unlike the rest of Sudan there seems to be a really relaxed atmosphere, and that's illustrated by the lack of armed troops and police men. This could be down to the fact that Khartoum is a world away from the rest of Sudan's problems. The people are also blessed with the typical Muslim hospitality, and you won't feel at all unwelcome, which is more than can be said than other places in the Middle  Read the complete review

When planning a holiday, Sudan probably doesn't immediately spring to mind. You probably think "who in their right mind would go to Sudan on holiday?", and I wouldn't blame you for thinking that. Sudan doesn't feature in glossy travel magazines or holiday brochures...instead it is a regular among the BBC World News items on war and famine in Africa. For that reason, tourists tend to give Sudan a wide berth, and the Sudanese government doesn't exactly encourage the adventurous few who do dare to enquire about visas. So why am I here?
