Koh Tao, or Turtle Island, is a tiny island measuring only 21km in the Gulf of Thailand. It is one of the smallest islands out of the many that are found dotted around in Thailand, yet also one of the busiest due to the abundance of coral reefs and wonderful opportunities to snorkel or scuba dive. ~ History ~ The island was previously uninhabited and only used for fishermen to take shelter from storms. Koh Tao is a small island in Southern Thailand, famous for its cheap PADI subca diving courses and beautiful beaches. The best (and cheapest way) to get to Koh Tao is from Chumphon (mainland Thailand), where you can get the midnight ferry. The name says it all and the midnight ferry does indeed leave the Chumphon port at midnight and arrives at Koh Tao at approximately 6am. It is a very sociable way to get to the island, as you normally make friends on the boat before even getting to the island, although do not expect to get too much sleep on the boat as it is not the most comfortable place to try to get your head down. Koh Tao is a small island only a dozen or so kilometres in circumference located in the Gulf of Thailand only a coupe of hours to the 'party islands' of Koh Pa Ngang and Koh Samui to the south. And whilst those islands are all about the partying Koh Tao is more about the diving. Koh Tao has a deserved shining reputation for diving spots. It's one of the cheapest and best places to learn how to dive and get your PADI Open Water certificate for £250/$350 for the 4 day course including accommodation.
