Kolhapur is a city in south of maharashtra state in India, near to Karnataka & Goa. This city is famous for its tourist spots like mahalakshmi temple, Panhala Fort, Kolhapuri Food, Kolhapuri Chappals & So on.

Well at this place i have spent 3 years of my life when i was doing my Degree in Computer Engg at D Y Patil college of Engg, Its one of the top college's in India. So i known most of the things about Kolhapur, and these three years are unforgettable for me as i had so much fun.

The main language spoken over here is Marathi, but people do speak Hindi, English, Gujrati etc... as this place is visited by so many people. Kolhapur was named after a Demon name 'Kolhasur' and was killed by Mahalakshmi (Goddes), becuase this was the last wish of the demon that the city would be named after him. Mahalakshmi is wife of Lord Tirupathi Balaji so every one who visits Balaji has to complete its visit by visiting Mahalakshmi as well. This Temple is visited my Millions of people Every year, there is a myth that this temple was built in on Night & out of one Big rock.
The people over here are of mixed religions, most of it Being Maratha Hindus, Gujrati, Jain, Marwadis, Muslims, Sindhis etc.

People over here are very rich, in every rich persons house you will find most of the world class cars. The first mercedes in India was bought by a person from Kolhapur, you wont belive this but its a fact as i have seen it from my own eyes, people here. If they have 10 to 12 people in thier house there are more than 20 to 25 cars in thier house. People over here are fond of everything.

this place was ruled by Chatrapathi Shahu Maharaj, and now his sons are the king. But there is no king rule as its run by the goverment of India.

This city is accesible by all means from Road, Trains & from Bombay by Airway. There is a daily flight from Bombay to Kolhapur.

I like the climate of kolhapur because its really coll over here, even in summers if the temp reaches 35C it is not that hot its cool most of the time which makes me happy to stay here in Summer rather than in Mumbai.

Food of Kolhapur is briliant its spicy, so any one of you who loves spicy food you will definetly love it, But if you dont then you can tell them not to make it spicy. Kolhapuri Misal which is eaten in breakfast is also famous in food lovers.

Kolhapuri Chappals are quite famous, Kolhapuri Gud(Jaggery), Kolhapuri chiliies are also famous. The place where you can get good things when you wanyt to shop are Madhwar road, Rajrampuri main road.etc.

Hotels in Kolhapur are good & cheap in price to stay as well, the good ones are
Victor Palace, Shalini Palace(This earlier was a palace of king which is now converted in to hotel). Vaishali hotel, & Raysons Regency.

The tourist spots in Kolhapur -

Religious spots - Mahalakshmi Temple

Jyotiba temple - which is 12 Km away from Kolhapur city is a temple on top of a mountain where you can go by road but if you want to track you can do that which is fun and it takes harly 45 Mins to reach at the top.

Temblai - Here there is a huge Ganapatis statue it is in the city itself near to Shivaji University, from this place you can see most of the kolhapur city, i suggest you go at this place after sunset you will like the view from here.

Then there are bahubali, Kaneri math and so on.

Forts -

Panhala fort is 20 Km from th city, i have been to this place may times & mostly at nights fater 11 or 12 PM with my friens on bike, we just use to love to ride at this time. But you should not miss the sunset from this place which is beautifull to watch.

Vishalgad Fort which is 60 Km away from the city is laso good to visit.
Shalini Palace, New palace & town hall are other place which are worth going.

You have rankala lake in the city where you chould go in the evening, there is a temple built in the lake itself which is under the water. You will like to try some snacks which is near to the lake.
Panchganga is the river which runs through Kolhapur.

Goa is also just 3 hours from here so if you planning to visit gos you should also plan for this place.

Hope you like it if you be there

Summary: A nice place to visit
