Advantages: Cheap accommodation, amazing islands surrounding
Disadvantages: Not too many sites in Krabi town itself
Krabi is a little town in Southern Thailand. In my opinion Krabi town itself does not have much to offer except cheap accommodation, but Krabi is surrounded by beautiful tropical islands which are easily accessible from Krabi.
We stayed in Krabi town itself whilst in Thailand instead of staying on the islands themselves as the accommodation on the islands can be pricey by Thai standards and we found great accommodation options at reasonable prices in Krabi. For anyone thinking of visiting this area I would recommend doing this as it saves you a lot of baht on accommodation and you can still visit the islands. Whilst we were there we took a speed boat from Krabi around a tour of the islands - this was a great experience and a lot of fun. Each island we visited was like a little piece of paradise. The speed boat takes you from beach to beach and gives you chance to relax and snorkel. Most boat tours tend to take you to Maya Bay which is where the film "The Beach" was filmed. This particular beach is normally very crowded with tourists as it is a very popular place to visit. As long as you are prepared for the crowds on this one beach you should have a great fun day out. A lot of the similar trips also visit Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley islands where the water is really clear and turquoise. My favourite islands in the Krabi area are Bamboo island and Tup island - recommended greatly!
Many of the islands surrounding Krabi were hit by the tsunami on boxing day of 2004, but as we looked around at the picturesque views it was very hard to imagine what it must have been like for the people caught up in that terrible disaster. There is very little evidence of the tsunami today apart from the odd "Tsunami evacuation route" signs dotted around.
Krabi town itself has all the amenities you need - hotels, guesthouses, a 7/11 shop, an ATM, pharmacy and most of the guesthouses also have somewhere to eat traditional Thai food.
A great place in Thailand.
Summary: A great base to explore the Southern Thai islands.
