Advantages: Amazing views! Clear, warm sea!

Disadvantages: Some of the shops are a bit pricey.

Krk is a small island in the northern Adriatic. It is part of Croatia, and is easilly accessed either by road from the Croatian mainland, or via air, with the island having its own airport. If you do as I did and travel to Krk by road, your first treat will be the spectacular bridge you cross over to enter the island, with some very interesting views.

There is a range of accomodation on Krk, including several campsites, villas, and hotels. There is something for all tastes and budgets.

The island itself is a very rugged place, with narrow winding roads and large rocky hills. Around every bend there is another spectacular view however, so make sure you take plenty of batteries for the camera!

Whilst there are no large sandy beaches like you may find in Spain, the coast is very beautiful, and there are some small beaches where you can enjoy the sun. The water here is incredibly clear and is excellent for scuba. The fish are plentiful and are easy to catch from the shore, although fishing boats are available.

My favourite part of my recent trip to Krk was a short ferry trip to the neighbouring, even smaller, island of Cres. The ferry trip lasts about twenty minutes, and I was fortunate enough to see dolphins jumping in the water less than a hundred meters from the ferry!

The only downside to Krk from my point of view is that the shops were a little expensive. This may have been as I was shopping in tourist areas, but I also think the fact that so much has to be transported onto the island pushes prices up a little as well.

Overall I enjoyed my two weeks in Krk greatly, and I am already planning on returning next year!

Summary: If you are looking for somewhere different than Greece or Spain, give Krk a go!
