Advantages: Excellent accommodation, Plenty to do, Excellent Entertainment

Disadvantages: might not get to see the rest of the island

There’s something weird about sitting in the sun taking in the rays and watching your seven year old receive a present from a fully clothed Santa Claus, but this is what happens on Christmas Day at the Lanzarote Beach Club. No I had not been drinking, it is just one of the things that they put on for the kids which makes your holiday that much more enjoyable. They also have lots of other things to keep you amused or should I say the little ones.

When you first enter the building you are struck by the wonderful Canadian designed and built entrance that is both cool and large. It’s also helped by the fact that you get a welcoming drink and you do not have to transport your cases to your accommodation, this is done for you using what will become Santa’s sleigh later in the week. It is from here that stairs lead off to the Sports Bar and Health Centre, another set of stairs downwards leads to the Night Club and yet another set takes you to the on-site supermarket and kids/games rooms.

Once booked in you can idly walk passed the 12 or so swimming pools to were you are staying. We were on the lagoon side and did in fact pass most of them. The accommodation is mainly around plazas (6 of them). Each one of these has a main swimming pool plus a kiddies pool, although I do wish (as with most Spanish resorts) they were heated by solar panels, as although it is sunny and warm the water is not. This did not stop my son, his friends and myself diving into all of them, although with more trepidation myself.

The fact that we were staying on the lagoon was a blessing in disguise. My son does not normally like sand but with some encouragement, he spent a lot of the time building castles etc. here and the water was naturally warmer, as it was not as deep as any of the pools, more importantly it was just across the path from our terrace so we could keep an eye on him.

The accommodation was very good, especially as the resor
t had apologised in advance, as we were unable to have a two bedroomed apartment. We need not have worried, we may only have had the one bedroom, but there was a Murphy bed as well as the usual convertible sofa. I now know what a Murphy bed is and my son thought it was great fun, should I share the secret?

The entertainment that is put on by the night club is simply some of the best you can get on holiday. The Kidz club starts at 20:30 and at 22:00 the entertainments’ team kicks in for an hour or so, their Xmas panto (on Boxing day) was brilliant with a packed audience laughing their socks off. This is then followed at 23:00 by the formal show and if you can last the pace then Happy Hour starts at midnight (Yes it is true!).

For the kids there are meetings in the morning 10ish to midday, in the afternoon 3ish to 5ish and in the evening 20:30 with all sorts of games and activities. Also there were themed parties for the kids such as the Gringe Xmas party in the Hacienda restaurant.

If you want something different in the way of entertainment you can go to the sports bar and try your hand at the usual sort of games such as darts etc. or even watch the live football, or if you are like me people watch which can be most entertaining. If you really want to try something different then you can always try out one of the sports that Lanzarote is famous for – Windsurfing – the club has a school on site so its only a matter of walking down to the lagoon and signing up.

Also on site for those who don’t want to leave the complex there is the Hacienda Restaurant and a Pizzeria for takeaways. However there are plenty of other places to eat in Costa Tequise, some that are very good and some that you wish you hadn’t bothered with, but more of that in another article which I will write under the appropriate heading after this.

Well what more can I say, we thoroughly enjoyed this holiday and I could reco
mmend this resort to anyone especially at Christmas and New Year, Christmas carols performed by both the residents and the English ex-patriots on the island are sung in the reception area and after the entertainment on New Year everyone comes back to this same area to ring in the New Year, in fact most people celebrated this twice thanks to the time difference.

Oh yes the Murphy bed. Well this is a double bed hidden in a wardrobe that can be brought down and having done so the cupboard doors come out the full length on the two sides of the bed, so it almost is in its own room.

So you've been back to the Canaries. I've just returned from Tenerife, may I invite you over to read my op? Cheers, Malu

I love Lanzarote but not sure about at Christmas. An interesting review. So that's what a Murphy bed is! I shall sleep at peace tonight - Kay
