Lefkas, or Lefkada, as the Greeks call it, is perhaps the least well-known of the Greek Islands. This small island is the closest on to the Greek coast, and really isn't naturally an island at all. The Corinthians are said to have dug out a channel around the year 390BC, that made Lefkas an island and made it easier to defend. Today a causeway links the island to the Greek mainland and it is fitted with a swing bridge which lets the shipping traffic through several times a day. Lefkas was inaccesible to tourist until after 1968, when Preveza Airport was opened to tourists for the first time. There had been a lot of opposition to it before that ... Read the complete review
