Advantages: easy to reach
Disadvantages: locals dont speak english
Overview
------------
The Limousin is a beautiful, unspoilt region of South West France. It is commonlly known as the French Lake district for its numerous rivers and lakes. Besides this the Limousin is also famous for its Beef.
Getting there
-----------------
We flew from East Midlands to Limoges with Ryanair. Flights were in the region of £90 return including taxes. Most UK airports fly to Limoges or other airports in range of the Limousin. Driving from Calais takes around 9 hours.
Prices
-------
A 3 bedroom Gite will set you back only £200 ish. Very cheap for the accomodation you get in return. Beware prices when you're there. Although rural France is a lot cheaper than the towns and cities the value of the pound makes it a very expensive destination at the moment.
Notable towns/villages
-----------------------------
We stayed in the Haute Vienne region and the village was called Peyrat le Chateau, a beautiful lakeside village with bars, restaurants and shops. Nearby you will find Eymoutiers a larger town with open air heated swimming pool - only 2 euros to get in and it is spotless. Beujeleuf is another local town with swimming on the lake - this is 5 mins from Peyrat.
Overall
---------
I love this region of France - it is very unspoilt and relaxed. Many of the locals dont speak English so you should brush up on your french before you go. The best time to visit is the summer months between May and August - temps reach up to 35'c. Look out for some spectacular thunder storms at night - they are amazing.
Summary: well worth a visit
