Lodz (Poland) ... the Łódź Voivodeship. The coat of arms of Łódź is canting, i.e. it contains a boat, alluding to the city's name which literally means "a boat" in Polish. Tourists in Łódź gravitate to Piotrkowska Street, which stretches north to south for a little over seven kilometres, making it the longest commercial street in the world. Recently renovated, it has many beautiful buildings dating back to the 19th century, in the architectural style of the Secession. Well worth visiting from late Spring to early Autumn, strolling from one pub to another on Piotrkowska Street allows one to immerse oneself in the friendly atmosphere of this unique Polish city.

Throughout this review I will refer to the Polish city of Lodz (with apologies - the Polish letter forms do not appear here), pronounced “Woodge” in its English or American form as Lodz. If in Poland you refer to it, and pronounce it as Lodz, or Lodge as I once heard an American commentator on TV, you’ll receive a blank expression – they are unlikely to know where you are talking about! A little while ago I wrote a day trippers guide to Edinburgh, having spent a couple of days there as well as having some previous experience in the Scottish capital.
