Advantages: Lacks Bali's crowds, Gili islands, Rinjani Volcano, secluded beaches around Kuta

Disadvantages: Gili's are becoming overdeveloped/pricey, Lombok's beaches are great but not the best...

Lombok is half a days ferry voyage from Bali and is a less crowded and developed option for those who seek some respite from the likes of Kuta-Bali.

The northern part of the island is dominated by Mount Rinjani which is actually a volcano. Treks up it can be arranged from various tour companies when you get to Lombok.

If you fancy islands with great beaches, buzzing nightlife, and fantastic diving and snorkeling then head for the Gili islands in the north-west a half hour from the mianland. There are 3 islands to choose from, each with it's own character; Gili Trawangan is the party capital whilst Gili Meno and Gili Air are much more low key (but you pay for this). Unfortunately backpackers are being priced out on all three as budget accomoodation is dissapearing fast in way for more mid-range options. High season is especially expensive where 150,000 rp (17$) a night is now the minimum for a single/double. Cheaper options (100,000 rp/12$) exist but are fast dissapearing and will inevitably be full when you arrive.

Kuta on Lombok is in no way related to Bali's Kuta. Infact Kuta town on Lombok is fairly low-key and isn't very developed at all. It also has some of the best surfing beaches in Indonesia so attracts loads of surfers. But it's nothing like Kuta-Bali.

Around the south of Lombok, to the east and west of Kuta, you can quite easily find a little sandy cove all to yourself. Hiring a motorbike and exploring yourself is the way to go. The roads aren't too bad, just drive slowly whilst enjoying the scenary.

The further south-west you go the less populated it gets. The south-west goast has a couple of remote islands and it's easy to find secluded beaches around the coast here.

Summary: A great alternative to Bali
