Advantages: Surfing, beach, loads of places to go out
Disadvantages: Easy to get stuck here
I moved to manly this week, a north beach suburb of sydney.
Manly is its own little world, its got shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, several beaches and loads of community facilities.
Firstly theres the manly wharf, you get the ferry here from circular quay for about 6 dollars. Here youl find the tourist information centre, some bars, and lots of little takeaway places to eat including nandos and mcdonalds. Next to the wharf theres a swimming beach which has a protective net, I wouldnt go in here just because its where the ferry comes in and there could be polution. However theres a nice view of the surrounding coastline.
If you cross the road, walk up the corso. Theres loads of surf shops here, my favourite being quicksilver. Theres also billabong and some independent shops. Along here theres a supermarket, some rubbish tourist shops and some cafes. Half of the corso is just for pedestrians so its a nice walk up to the beach.
The Steyne beach is the best part of Manly. Its a really long stretch of beach, where you can surf, play volleyball, swim and the whole length is watched by the lifeguards. The swimming section is right next to the lifeguard station.
Along the beach front there are plenty of bars and restaurants to feed and water you. A good one for drinks is Henry Afrikas, theres the steyne hotel for night time and the new brighton hotel has shark bar which plays good music and has 5 dollar cocktails on wednesday night.
Its nice to walk along the beach front, there are loads of picnic places, although watch out for the seagulls they are so annoying. They will swoop down and take food out of your hand!
People in Manly are friendly, in all the bars staff are friendly and service is good in most restaurants. Look around for the cheaper options though if your on a budget as the beach front restaurants charge twice what the hotels further back do.
Public transport isnt great here, theres a rowdy queue for taxis home, although there is one good bus service thats free called the hop, skip jump bus. Its good if you live in suburbs like fairlight as you can get on in town and get dropped off at the end of your road. Ive used this nearly every day between the hours of 8 - 6 and its saved me a lot of money and my feet from walking up the huge hill.
Theres plenty of hotels to stay in, but I havent stayed in any. There are a few hostels as well, so youl always have somewhere to stay. Im finding it hard to find a room in a house for my price range at the moment so will just keep on looking.
I love manly so far, and have found it easy getting a job. Now I just need to make some friends!
Summary: Its my favourite part of sydney
