MonchiqueNewest Review: ... when killed. They have no sentiment when it comes to killing their pig or chickens. Monchique can be a harsh environment as it is known for flooding on occasions. One year the flooding was so bad the army had to be called in to repair bridges. Forest fires usually occur every year in this area and I have known peoples land be destroyed including my husband's family land which is near Marmelete, about 15 minutes away from the town of Monchique. Over the years they have lost fruit trees, eucalyptus and pine trees through floods and fire but fortunately nature has a way of healing and restoring everything back to how it should be. Monchique is one town in the Algarve that hasn't really changed greatly over the years. People who live in the valley of Monchique go about their daily business the same way they have done for centuries. Mass tourism has invaded most towns from Faro to Sagres in the West but seems to have left Monchique behind. Here the burro (cross between a donkey and an ass) is still used to work the land and to take people to the vegetable markets to buy and sell their produce. Old ladies walk around dressed in black wearing their straw hats to cover their heads from the burning sun.
