... welcoming and occasionally quite eccentric. We were fortunate to accidentally stumble upon the 850th birthday of the city. What a party! A massive street party with over a million people on the streets throughout the city. Plenty of food and alcohol available from street vendors and live music stages with bands and DJ's predictably pumping out the Hof in to the night. I backpacked around Europe last summer and Munich was the surprise highlight despite the average weather. We stayed in a hostel called 'The Tent', an absolutely brilliant place to stay, complete with guitar around the camp fire every night, table tennis tables, good secure lockers, comfy bunk beds, a good shower block, good food, internet access....I could go on. Basically everything you could hope for in a hostel. Anyway to the city, we went on a free walking tour which departs every weekday I believe from Marian Platz at 10. Munich should top the list of every traveller headed to Europe. There are a wealth of tourist attractions, the weather is almost always fantastic, and the city is vrey aesthetically pleasing. Among the best attractions are the Frauenkirche, the Rathaus, Mariensplatz and Odeonsplatz. If castles are your thing then be sure to check out Schloss Nymphenburg.
