I have been to Nelson twice once in 2005 and again in 2007. Nelson is a nice city, however there is not a lot to do during the day and if you are staying in hostels then there are not that many nice ones. If you are on a tight time schedule then one night is sufficient to see most of Nelson. Nelson does have the biggest fishing port in Australasia so there is plenty of fresh fish around to buy, and the restaurants also serve really good fish. If you walk down to the harbour there are various restaurants, and fish and chip shops to choose from.
