Advantages: Beach, Quiet location, choice of quiet rooms.
Disadvantages: Food, rooms are spread out.
We have just returned for the Sol Club on Cayo Guillermo in Cuba. The cayos are a group of small islands of the north of Cuba that are connected to the mainland by a long road. Cayo Guillermo is only 6km long with 4 hotels, the neighbouring island of Cayo Coco has a new international airport and is larger with more hotels. There isn't much to do on Cayo Guillermo which is part of it's charm. Trips can be arranged and are reasonably priced to vist other locations on Cuba. You can also dive on the reef which is only 2km away or speed boat through the mangroves on a jungle tour. The main attraction of Cayo Guillermo is the beach. It is a gently shelving ( and I do mean gently, it takes you about 200m or more to get over your shoulders), white sand tropical paradise. Who needs to go diving when there is enough fish next to the beach. The hotel is a village type complex with rooms in 2 storey buildings scattered over lush tropical gardens. Some rooms (if you require a quiet room) can be quite a walk from the heart of the complex. The pool is adequate, but with a beach like there is you don't use the pool. Entertainmnet is kept going from 10am to after midnight so there is always something to do for those who aren't olympic sun worshippers. The all inclusive arrangement keeps in drink and food for 24 hours. This doesn't mean the complex is noisy as the nightclub is far from any rooms on an island in the mangroves. One drawback of this hotel is the food. 24 hour snacks means a choice of only a tasted sandwich. The main restauranr serves teh same food every lunch and evening. It even gets so predictable that you know exactly where each selection will be placed. The food may be boring but it is also plentiful and it wouldn't stop me returning. I would recommend the location to everyone and the hotel to anyone except serious foodies.
