In the 5th century AD Attila brought about its destruction and it collapsed socially and economically. The port along with the Forum, Roman graveyard, streets and houses can still be seen. We started with the port as we were staying right beside it. You enter through an impressive large gateway and walk along a raised pathway lined with cypresses (those thin, tall, dark evergreens that seem to always surround historical areas) with the river on one side and the ruins of the port on the other. The port was 350 metres (more than 1,000 ft) long. It’s a lovely walk which brings ... more |

Last week we spent three days in the small town of Aquileia in the region of Friuli in the northeast of Italy. It is the most important Roman archaeological site in northern Italy and is protected by UNESCO. We arrived in the evening and were immediately astounded as we drove past tall roman columns. We had actually never heard of Aquileia and so we didn’t know what to expect. In fact I had chosen it as a good central location for a spot of sightseeing in the surrounding area. This town has been around since 181BC when the Romans built it. It used to have all the usual Roman buildings such as amphitheatre, thermal baths, circus and so forth. In ... Read the complete review

Reggio di Calabria was founded by the Greeks, conquered by the Romans, seized by the Ostrogoths, captured by the Byzantines, annexed by the Arabs, ruled by the Normans, and squabbled over by the Swabians, Angevins, Austrians and Aragonese. But all that was then. The great earthquake of 1908 destroyed more than just buildings, and the modern town, stymied by years of neglect and under investment, hollowed out by mass emigration, and entangled by the malign tentacles of the 'ndrangheta (the Calabrian Mafia), owns to its deflation in every bare piazza, litter strewn back street and graffiti coated wall. ARRIVAL From the north, services terminate at ... Read the complete review

Don't you know savigliano? Savigliano in my town, in the northern Italy, between Turin (in italian Torino), and Cuneo. Savigliano is an historical town, with a lot of monuments, museum, parks, but it isn't well know by the turist, and there are few visitors. You can see all the rinascimental palace, Cravetta palace, Muratori palace, Villa palace (that are all the residence of the old family in Savigliano), in the spare time, there is a big park, Graneris park, in the center of town. In the museum there are al lot of storical statues, picture and historical repert. There are three old square, and more than 10 church, with a lot of picture and ... Read the complete review

I have stayed at Bertinoro for two weeks for a summer school which is held here. Bertinoro is a small city (I guess it can be said a small town) which is located near Bologna. I have to take about 30 to 50 minutes train from Bologna to arrive Forli', which is another town near Bertinoro and then have to take a bus for about 30 minutes to reach Bertinoro. Actually to be honest, there is nothing much to see around Bertinoro, however I think it is the good point of Bertinoro. It is a hill town. I stayed in University Residential Bertinoro which is located on top of the hill. Surrounding the hill are the houses, shops and restaurants. From the top of the hill, I can get ... Earlier this year I travelled to the Alps in Italy for a week of skiing. It was the first time that I had ever set foot on a pair of skis and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I first arrived I was amazed by the spectacular mountains with their white toped peaks and couldn't wait to get up on them. There was snow everywhere, it was just like Christmas. The atmosphere in the small town in were I stayed was tremendous. The people were extremely friendly and were very welcoming to me and my friends. The next day was my first day of skiing. When everything was settled about hiring equipment and meeting my instructor for ... Read the complete review
