Last year my partner and I went to Vatera on the island of Lesbos. The island is not for those who are seeking another Corfu, Crete or Majorca type holiday.It is still essentially very much Greece.It is a big rugged dramatic island with lovely beaches.The scenery can be spectacular, such as the large fossilised forest in the west of the island, set in a vast moonscape-like landscape. The villages are delightful - full of Greeks doing their day to day shopping and yet with lots of quality gifts to bring home from the local potteries or artists' studios. Be prepared to stumble across ancient ruins of Temples or Baths which are quite ignored by the Greece due to their frequency. The food is cheap, varied and tasty. Don't miss the sardine festivals where free sardines and authentic Greek dancing are plentiful and the odd tourist is definitely a rare species. Vatera was the mythical beach where the Greek army camped before the attack with their famed Trojan Horse. We self catered in the Dionyssos - which also has a sizeable camping site.
