Advantages: Beautiful scenery, lovely people

Disadvantages: Nidri - if you like peace and tranquility

For those of you planning to go to Levkas at any point I have one suggestion - hire a car.

The island itself is like many other Greek islands - dusty, hot and a pleasant place to go.

There are numerous small resorts, most famously Nidri and Vasiliki. The first is the closest the island appears to get to Corfu town and the second is the place to go if you fancy yourself as a windsurfer.

However the true beauty of the island comes from the hinterland, up amongst the hills that form the majority of the countryside.

Without a form of transport it is nigh on impossible to easily see the beauty of the island in just a short holiday.

If one likes being in a town and living on the beach then this is not for you as the life in Nidri is not the greatest. However if you like peace and quiet then you need a car to escape Nidri.

There a grottos to be found, waterfalls to be refreshed by and a lifestyle from another, gentler, more relaxed era.

To truly know the meaning of greek food the best action is to head into the hills and find a small taverna, complete with two shiny metal tables outside, possibly a veranda overlooking a valley, and host that speaks no English.

Try out your basic Greek and by a mixture of sign language and basic comprehension a meal that could have graced the table of Dionysius himself will be yours with no need to enquire as to whether the ingredients are GM modified - you probably passed the goat on the way up!
