This square is the commercial centre of the island during the day and during the evenings it is full of both locals and tourists sitting outside the little bars and cafes; it has an open-air market, numerous shops and tiny bars and it is the heart of the city. Victoria, also know as Rabat, is the capital city of the second largest of the Maltese Islands, Gozo. Unfortunately most people who visit Gozo on a day trip from Malta do not visit Victoria, they drive through it on their way to the local beauty spots. Victoria is a city full of narrow streets with old houses that have typical Mediterranean style balconies adorned with brightly coloured flowers and it is dominated by the Citadel built high on a cliff with magnificent views. We spent two weeks in early October visiting Malta. As my husband and myself both like swimming and snorkeling we decided to visit Golden Bay for this purpose. Golden Bay sounds a delightful name. It is a nice stretch of sandy beach and even in October was busy with sunbathers, people playing beach games, swimming etc. It is situated on Malta's west coast. Whilst I was sunbathing, my husband went for a walk along the beach. He saw a man's body being recovered from the sea (brought ashore by someone on a jet ski).
