Advantages: Nice weather, friendly people
Disadvantages: cannot think of any
Buea is the Capital of the South West Province in the Republic of Cameroon, a country located in Central Africa. The town in the days that the Germans used to be in the Country was the nations capital. Things have changed a lot since then, two world wars, independence of the country in 1960 and reunification of the Anglophone and Francophone part of the country in 1972.
The city or town as it is referred to over here is located at the foot of the Mount Cameroon was at 4090 metres is the highest peak mountain in West Africa. Buea is a town that is relatively easy to get around in. There are yellow cabs that would take you to the different parts of the town for about 200 francs CFA a drop.A Euro is about 655.99 france CFA,so that is not an expensive ride at all. You can also walk to a few of the locations. The weather in the town, maybe because of its location at the foot of the mountain is cool year round. That is not the case in the other parts of the country. So the cool weather makes it possible for you to go out just about whatever time that you choose to.It does rain at times, but the town is also hilly, making it less likely for you to get mudded when it rains. Also the roads in the town are tarrred and pretty much well kept. So if you plan on doing any driving or hire a cab to take you around, then it makes no difference when you visit it. The rain does fall during the months of Novemeber through May, but it does not do so for very long periods of time. And once it stops raining you can pretty much head out.
The main attraction in the town is the Mount Cameroon. There are quite a few persons that visit it yearly and it is a relatively easy Mountain to make it to the top.Guides would be provided for helping you make the climb. It does get cool as you go further up the mountain, but nothing compares to cool winter periods that you have in say Europe or North America.
There is a local University Campus in a place called Molyko, about a cab drive away. It is one of the places that you might want to visit. There is a computer center there in case you need to check on your emails while out of the country. Cyber cafes are also available for such purpose but the internet speed connections in them seem to move very slow.
If you are a Soccer fan, there is a first division side here that plays its home games at the Molyko Omnisport stadium. The stadium is just a walking distance from where the University of Buea student campus is located. The team that call the place home is Mt Cameroon FC and they are a pretty decent side.
Accommodation is real cheap.Just ask around and you would be shown places that you could spend the night.
Getting into the Country
You can book you flight to either get into the country through the Douala international Airport or the Nsimalem Airport in Yaounde. The former would be the closer area to the town and the road leading there is pretty decent.
Some parts of this review might seem familiar in my review of the country as a whole
Summary: A great place to visit

- 05/10/08 Reading your review I don't get the feeling of you actually being there. What did *you* do? We want to read about *your* personal experience, not just a guidebook-like description of the place. Not "you can do this or that", but "*I* did this or that when I was there". |
