Penrhyn CastleNewest Review: ... of North Wales and so it came to pass that he owned the largest slate mine in the world at Bethesda. An archetypal Victorian "mill owner" he proceeded to oppress a whole community for over 3 years in the longest ever shut out in working history. The Penrhyn lockout was a shocking example of Victorian Industrial relations which saw a community torn apart as low paid quarry workers fought for a better life against an intransigent owner who was hell bent on destroying any opposition. Sadly there was no ACAS in the 1890s and the small town of Bethesda has never recovered to this day. For several years the town subsisted on han... more |

My wife and myself are both members of the National Trust and paid a visit to Penrhyn Castle a few weeks ago. Firstly the place isnt a castle. It was built in the 1830s to satisfy the vanity of the first Lord Penrhyn, an attempt to give the fellow a veneer of respectability he did not deserve. This chap was a Liverpool merchant who built his fortune on the production of sugar in the West Indies. More accurately he built his fortune on slave labour. As you wander through the rather sombre mock Norman halls you cannot shake off this essential fact. Everything that you see was built on the backs of slave labour. The next owner of this ... On our recent holiday to North Wales we visited several National Trust properties in the area. Penrhyn Castle was one of these and certainly one of the more spectacular of the National Trust properties we have visited. Where is it **************** The property is located 1 mile east of Bangor, at Llandygai on A5122. Signposted from junction 11 of A55 and A5. We found the signposts very helpful and got us there without any problems. The property is also on a bus route and you would then have to walk up the drive to the property. We found the parking at the castle to be very good it is a short 5 minute walk from the car park to the castle ... Read the complete review

I recently visited Penrhyn Castle with my husband and 3 children, two of whom are under the age of 2 and are therefore in a double buggy. We decided to visit Penrhyn Castle after picking up a leaflet regarding the property. The advertising leaflet states that it is suitable for all ages, and that there is something for everyone. I actually really disagree with this statement and we were left very disappointed with our visit. Firstly, the first thing I should point out is that Penrhyn Castle isnt actually a castle and is in fact a stately home. It is a beautiful property located on the outskirts of Bangor, North Wales and is conveniently located a short ... Read the complete review

As a member of the National Trust I have visited a number of places around England and Wales. I have on several occasions been to Penrhyn Castle as they have a number of activity days throughout the year which are very entertaining in themselves. I am very impressed by this building that was built between 1820 and 1845. The building is very well presented and the rooms are a delight to walk through especially the dining room which has to be seen to be believed. It never fails to impress me. The bedrooms and the kitchen are also favoutites of mine as they take you back in time by the display of utensils and materials. Each room has a member of staff who will tell you ... A few weeks ago hubby and I joined the National Trust using the money his mom had given him for his birthday and today we finally christened our membership cards! Mom in law is currently staying with us for a couple of weeks so the three of us decided to go and take a look around Penrhyn Castle. The weather forecast was dire so we wanted somewhere that we could be indoors. As it happens the rain didn't arrive until we got home at tea time but that's often how it happens here and we don't complain! Penrhyn Castle is situated about two miles from Bangor in North Wales. To get there you can catch one of the numerous buses that run from ... Read the complete review
