PlovdivNewest Review: ... museum in town is the Ethnographic museum, which is hosted in a building with carved ceilings, but I did not manage to visit this, neither the other museums hosted in other properties. I was there on business and I spent the morning in the Hotel. I only managed to go back to the centre o town after lunch and then in the afternoon I met one more client and then went back to Sofia by car. It took me 3 hours to reach the Hotel in Sofia. As I said, the highlight of Plovdid is surely the old part of town, which has been very well restored. If you have few days to spend in Bulgaria, I recommend you visit Plovdiv.... more |

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and dates back to the 5000 BC when the Thracians set there. Since then, it has always been inhabited. Today Plovdid is probably lacking from an International airport which would open the city to not only more tourists, but also more business people. Interestingly enough, the city has got a reputation for being rich. I only spent one night and one day there, and I missed on most of the interesting places. I stayed at the Novotel Hotel, which is a bit away from the centre of town, this was a mistake, but taxis are very cheap in Bulgaria and I managed to stroll in the old part of town at night and then go back to the ...

Imagine a place older than Athens, older than Carthage, older than Rome; a place brimming with archaeological and historical treasures but that hardly gets any visitors in comparison with the others. Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second city, is just such a place. In 432 Plovdiv was conquered by Philip of Macedonia and under the Roman Empire it was the capital of Thrace. The legacy of the Romans alone would make Plovdiv stick out as a place of great significance but it doesn't stop there.
