Advantages: Easy to get to, Self Catering

Disadvantages: Needs upgrading

I first started going to pontins when I was a teenager. It was introduced to me by a group of friends I used to go out with. I was only 18 at the time. They suggested that it was great for entertainment and they when you'd had a few drinks it was only a short distance back to your chalet. They said if you were lucky you could even invite a girl back for a coffee!! Well I went on a few weekends at Prestatyn. Sadly not many of the girls liked coffee and all I found was young lads wanting to cause trouble.

However many years passed and I went back with a young lady (who liked coffee) and our 3 children. Nothing really had changed, except I saw a total different side of Pontins. I saw the family side. Lots of great entertainment for the kids and a childrens show of an evening. I'm sure the carpets were the same as they had been 20 years earlier. Decor was still pretty poor but I did notice some works had been carried out to the chalets and the entrance hall, and got the distinct impression things were on the up.

They had an activity camp but for anybody wanting to try it book well in advance. We didn't and the kids missed out. We did have a go on the four wheel bikes and they were hard work. The swimming pool was indoor and heated and there was also a 'baby' pool. The slides were not sufficient and the building looked tired.

One thing I would warn against is the arcades. They don't half swallow a lot of money up. In exchange you win a few lousy tickets to exchange for prizes, of little value. Even then at the end of the week we had to queue up for over an hour to collect them.

There are shops on site and restaurants so really you can be self sufficient. In fact I saw many coaches arrive and go. Also remember you have to pay for your own electricity in most chalets.

Summary: Cheap Accommodation but the extras add up!
