Advantages: lack of noisy teenagers and clubs

Disadvantages: Stays of more than a week would require car hire

Puerto Pollensa is picturesque little town just north of the bay of Alcudia on the North-East coast of Mallorca.

While some parts of Mallorca such as Magaluf on the South West Coast are known for their party atmosphere and attract reams of young clubbers looking for an 18-30 club experience, the North of the island could not be more different. Quieter and much less developed, this is the Mallorca I love.

There are enough hotels to provide reasonably priced accommodation but Puerto Pollensa is more suited to villa and apartment living. There is a main square in the middle of town which houses the majority of the restaurants and bars and the famous "Pine Walk" gives stallholders the ideal venue to sell their wares. The pine walk is a long street running alongside the beach which by day, although lovely, houses some of the usually beachfront shop tat. By night, it is transformed by locals selling traditional jewellery and clothing and sand sculptors fashioning amazing structures which line the shore. It is a charming place to take a walk before dinner.

The beach itself is very clean and although not huge, it is usually easy to find your own little corner. There are the usual sun beds and pedalos available but they are not necessary. The water is shallow for a long way out, so it is perfect for children or those who just want a cooling paddle.

Away from the main area are some aparthotels and we would recommend the Bahia de Pollensa as good value for money.

If you hire a car or fancy the walk, the old town of Pollensa is about 5km inland. All winding streets and old stone, if you want authentic Mallorca, this is a good place to start.

All in all, we found this resort to have a lovely mix of lively restaurants and bars and the peace and quiet we were craving. Although hiring a car would mean being able to explore the island I must admit we like it so much we spend all our time in Puerto Pollensa!

Summary: A great holiday destination
