Advantages: Calm and warm waters of the Med, great places to eat, lovely scenery
Disadvantages: Expect some rain if you don't go in peak season
Puerto Pollensa in the north of the balaeric island of Majorca is a great family resort. About a 40 minute transfer from Palma airport, Puerto Pollensa is a resort based in a horse shoe shaped bay surrounded by mountains - which gives it quite a unique and romantic feel. With the warm, calm and shallow waters of the Meditteranean, the waters are perfect for the kids. The area is quiet but bustling with restaurants along the waterfront, known as Pine Walk; perfect for dining out at night and watching the sea (although the waters are so calm you don't get many waves). While some parts of Majorca such as Magaluf in the South are more catered towards the partiers and younger generation, northern Majorca is more catered towards the family.
Puerto Pollensa is quite quiet and whilst there's great restaurants and a picturesque harbour which houses some stunning boats, if you want to do more than just lie on the beach all day you'll need to hire a car to explore. There's a great little pizza/italian place opposite the marina which is a must to go to - delicious! There is an Irish pub and a couple of bars including some karaoke haunts, but nothing too lively. There is one nightclub that doesn't open til 1am and is only busy after about 3am with the locals. You would never find it unless you had looked it up either as its away from Pine Walk and the main square. If you do hire a car, visit the old town of Pollensa for the day, or take a short ten minute drive across to Alcudia which is also quiet but a bit larger than Pollensa and offers more choice for restaurants and bars. Formetor is also a good place to go for the day. There are also hiking treks up into the mountains which give you some stunning views of the island.
The beach is blue flagged and very clean (white sands) and stretches for quite a way from Pine Walk all the way down for a couple of miles towards Alcudia. The beach gets quite busy but as it's so large you won't have to fight for a space. The sunloungers can be expensive to hire for the day (as they are in most places) but as the beach is lovely white sands you realy don't need one.
The Pollensa Park Hotel is often a popular choice with tourists but to be honest most of the apartments and hotels along Pine Walk are just as good and a little bit nearer to the restaurants.
The weather in Majorca can be varied. I have been in May before and it rained the entire week, but know people who have also been in May and been sweltering in 80 degree heat. So you take your chances - the Balaeric Islands always seem to bear the brunt of Spain's worst weather it seems! Best bets are July and August for practically guaranteed sunshine.
Overall Puerto Pollensa is a place to go for a tranquill and relaxing break. If you want somewhere where they aren't hoardes of teenagers falling out of bars at night, and where you can relax during the day and eat good food at night and somewhre safe for the kids then this place is your best bet.
Summary: Great family resort - lovely atmosphere
