There are very few places where you can park for free. Sigtuna is a small, ancient village on the banks of Lake Mälaren. It was founded about 1000 AD and was the capital of the region until 1255 when it burnt down. Stockholm took over its role as a commercial centre while the royal power passed to the city of Uppsala. The old village centre now comprises a pedestrianised main street, parallel to the lake front, of old picturesque wooden buildings housing shops and the tourist office, and a number of side streets with charming small cafes.
