Fernando de Noronha (Brazil) ... reaching Fernando de Noronha we d mentioned it was one of our planned destinations to Brazilians we met and invariably they would sigh, and remark on how beautiful it was - paradise even... such wonderful beaches. Now, if asked I would not describe myself as a beach person, but then the beaches on Fernando do Noronha are not just like any beaches. If you are going to Brazil and want to treat yourself, or are just looking for a destination that is a little bit special then this could be the place. The island is small. Salvador da Bahia ... in the state of Bahia, north east Brazil (or São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos as it was named in the past) was the first colonial capital city of Brazil and, although power shifted to Rio de Janeiro in the late eighteenth century, then to Brasilia in 1960, it retains much of it s past grandeur and colonial architecture. One of the main reasons to come here, however, is the wonderful mix of cultural influences that make the cuisine, music and lifestyle here so different even to other parts of Brazil. Machu Picchu ... when I was there and worth every penny. I haven t laughed so much in a long time. All of the exhibits had no hair and were stuffed badly and had teddy bear style eyes sewn on. The boa constrictor was stuffed so full that it was completely straight and looked like a draft-excluder. Food in Cusco was mostly not great, as with so much of South America, but the night before the Inca Trail we decided to have a slap-up meal and a few beverages. The local delicacy of guinea pig seemed like a good idea as the main course, but that proved to be a mistake, first of all looking like my childhood pet, but also, was almost certainly road-kill.
