Split is a bit cheaper than the islands and Dubrovnik but not by much, what I find attractive about it is the fact that it gently combines neat cobbled alleyways, an ancient Roman palace and cathedral, a beach and a wonderful promenade. To be honest, I save my sea time for the islands but a quick dip is still a valid cooling down option. The town square is also a very pleasant place for a photo or two, although I do find town squares have their limitations! Split, like just about all of Dalmatia has a history of being swapped and conquered by rival Empires - the majority of which was either the Hungarians, the Venetians and later the Austro-Hungarians before becoming Yugoslavia after World War 2. As admirable as the walled city is in Dubrovnik, for me it's also its downfall because it means that the centre is so cramped and Split's sea front gives Split a more spacious feeling.
