Advantages: Quality sea side town, well connected, spacious

Disadvantages: None

Split, like just about all of Dalmatia has a history of being swapped and conquered by rival Empires - the majority of which was either the Hungarians, the Venetians and later the Austro-Hungarians before becoming Yugoslavia after World War 2.

As admirable as the walled city is in Dubrovnik, for me it's also its downfall because it means that the centre is so cramped and Split's sea front gives Split a more spacious feeling. Split is often the first destination on the backpackers adventure into Croatia with an overnight train connection from capital Zagreb. Split is a bit cheaper than the islands and Dubrovnik but not by much, what I find attractive about it is the fact that it gently combines neat cobbled alleyways, an ancient Roman palace and cathedral, a beach and a wonderful promenade. To be honest, I save my sea time for the islands but a quick dip is still a valid cooling down option. The town square is also a very pleasant place for a photo or two, although I do find town squares have their limitations!

Split is not just a tourist town and it's this which gives it a more genuine feel, with a population of 220,000 you will come into contact with numerous locals instead of just foreigners!

I've always been fascinated a bit with boat yards and harbours and if you continue walking away from the city centre after the train station, you can enjoy a different side of the city. It would be a bit weird to say that was my favourite thing about Split though, so that honour goes to enjoying a beer, pizza or ice cream on Split's sea front.

Split is well connected by bus with the rest of Croatia and the journey from Zagreb is much quicker than the train. Catamarans and ferries connect Split with numerous islands and other towns including the popular Korcula, Hvar and Dubrovnik. Accomodation can be easily found in the form of private rooms, the chances are offers will come to you at the harbour, bus station or train station.

Summary: I like it!
