Advantages: Escaping the busy city but still close by
Disadvantages: Having to travel back to unload shopping bags
I honestly believe my recent holiday in New York was cheaper than Europe. The pound may be much weaker against the dollar than earlier in the year, it is still weak against the Euro.
I flew with Continental from Heathrow, just under £300 return (meals, drinks and luggage included). Direct to Malaga from Heathrow, with BA will cost around the same. Already saving a few pounds, food and shopping will be cheaper.
I flew into Newark airport, New Jersey. I can't recommend any hotels to stay in, as I was visiting friends in Newport/Jersey City. But one thing I do recommend is not actually staying in New York.
You save money on the airport transfers; I used the airport shuffle service, which cost $28 (excluding tips) to Jersey City. Shuttle or taxi into Manhattan is usually around $45-55. Again saving more money.
You are probably thinking well isn't that a little far out? No, transport into Manhattan is actually really easy and still cheaper than staying centrally. PATH train costs $1.75 single or $3.50 return trip into Manhattan. The following stops are: Christopher St, 9th St, 14th St, 23rd St, 33rd St. You can also go straight to the WTC during the week. The train runs 24/7, so if you want to be in the city that never sleeps but actually go back to sleep you can at whatever time you please.
There may not be much around Newport area but Hoboken isn't too far away. You will only notice you are so close to New York when you look at the skyline. Such beautiful views can be seen from both Newport harbour and Hoboken. Small shops, bar, restaurants and a mall there are things to do without the hustle and bustle of the city.
If you have seen all there is to be seen in New York, which I am not sure is physically possible, there is always the option of other amazing US cities. Boston and Washington aren't too difficult to get to and still it won't cost you the earth. It may not be as quick as flying or the train but MegaBus will certainly get you there comfortably and with spending money to spare. New York to Boston return, booking the day before will cost $33.50; booking in advance could cost $12.50. There are amazing hostels that are pretty cheap and offer good value for money.
I keep mentioning how much money you will save. Well considering how much cheaper the US is, Christmas shopping could be a good excuse to go. Thanksgiving on 27th is also the start of a few sales, again saving a little bit more.
Only problem you will be facing is getting all your bargains home. Actually, for most airlines you can take two suitcases to and back from the US, ideal for carrying all those goodies back home.
Just one little reminder, Nationwide Flexi Account Visa debit card has no fees when using abroad. Also exchange rates can be slightly better on card than cash.
Good luck planning your next bargain hunting trip to New York x
