Advantages: the last place to exchange Lao kip!

Disadvantages: absolutely nothing to do, Stung Treng is just a small border town.

Stung Treng is little more than a border region and Stung Treng town the provincial capital borders Laos and you will most likely end up here if the border crossing is closed into Laos.

Stung Treng is one of the few places outside of Lao where you can exchange any Lao Kip that you have left over. This is your last chance so even if the exchange rate is unfavourable you should probably just bite the bullet and exchange here. It's better than carrying around a load of kip that you can't exvhange anywhere thus rendering it useless!

Stung Treng has some okay budget guesthouses by the river but a few will try to sell you bus tickets for very high and unfair prices, so be careful!
There are a couple of good places to eat and have a drink by the river, but there is really nothing that Stung Treng offers. It is simply a border town and feels very much like one.

There are of course far worse border towns to get stuck in, but if you can try to get over the border into Laos before the border closes at 5pm because only a couple of hours by minibus on the other side in Laos lies Don Det, a very pleasant island on the mekong river that is a great place to stay for a few days.
