Advantages: very hot
Disadvantages: alot of begger
I went to Sunny beach on the western coast of Bulgaria last summer and as far as a tourist destination, it was perfect. Full of pubs for the British punters, British food and English speakers.
As far as a cultural holiday, it was nothing like it, the only sense of Bulgarian culture was the bus drive through the very poor areas of grasslands. There was a lovely little town called nessebar, which was a short train ride from sunny beach. It was one of those sleepy little towns which survives only on the input from tourists.
Anyway back to sunny beach, the place is exactly what the name says, really sunny. The beach has blue seas, and sand shipped in from somewhere and put there next to the beach, you could tell it wasn't naturally there. The only problem with the beach, (this may be because of my inexperience of holidays at peak time) was that there was no place where you could mess about and play football. The beach seemed to be a place where you sunbath in the day and bring prositutes to at night. It is simply covered with sun loungers.
Things might have changed now since the introduction of the euro, but when i went a shot of tequila was only 30 pence and a pint around a quid. However all British imported alcohol costed much more such as strongbow and becks.
I can remember not being bored once however walking up the street could be a bit of a chore at times, there would be restaurant staff standing outside with menus begging you to come and eat in there, or people begging for money to save animals, and even went as far as bringing a crocodile out in the street and saying they needed money to pay for it.
Overall if you want a really touristy kind of holiday in the sun then this is the place for you but if you want somewhere with real culture then go somewhere else.

- 11/02/09 What a shame...when my parents went to Bulgaria a few years back, they said it was beautiful and quite unspoiled. Flipping British tourists ruining things again lol! |
