Newest Review: ... as you arrive. Where can I stay? It is entirely possible to spend a day in Tiraspol and get a feel for the place but it is much more fun to stay at least one night. Most budget visitors stay at Hotel Druzhba, a former Soviet affair that hasn’t really stepped out of the Soviet era. It is staffed by jobsworth middle-aged ladies who have no customer service skills or common sense. Of all the places I planned to visit on my three month trip around the black Sea this summer, I was looking forward to none more than Tiraspol, the capital of a tiny breakaway Republic in the east of Moldova. I have always enjoyed visiting unusual places and the crazy republic of Transdniestr really fits the bill. It even has its own currency which is totally worthless outside its own borders. Moldova is lucky enough (from my twisted point of view) to have two breakaway regions but Gaugazia in the southwest is more moderate than Transdniestr and in return for being quite reasonable is allowed to be fairly autonomous.
