On the outskirts of Troyes there are several shopping outlets offering great bargains in designer clothing and other goods. These are almost villages in themselves, with an array of shops selling everything from clothes to household goods. Visit in early September for the real bargains, when they sell off the summer stock before autumn. Within half an hour's travelling distance of Troyes is the Lac d'Orient, a lakeside resort which is favoured by the French as a tourist destination. Troyes is reputedly the capital of France's Champagne district, competing with Reims for the title apparently according to the locals. The city itself is a mix of timbered buildings, some of them appearing to be almost falling down they are so old. Wander the narrow streets off the beaten tourist track and you will find some real treasures of old buildings tucked away. There are lots of shops and restaurants, street cafes and bars, you really are spoilt for choice in food. However do check the menu carefully and make sure you know what you are ordering, the town has a lot of local specialities which may not be to your liking. On the ...
