Advantages: Picturesque, sandy beach
Disadvantages: nothing - although parking could be issue at busy times
Aberdyfi is picturesque. We stayed just a mile or so outside of Aberdyfi so inevetably we went in a few times.
We found the easiest place to park was the main car park, it's very close to the beach and shops, the car park's around Wales all seem to have a standard price which is really useful. 2hrs was £1.50 which I thought very reasonable.
There is a jetty where there were many children (and adults!) hanging over the edge crab fishing! there were many in the pots as well!! It was fun to watch while we were eating our icecream from the well known homemade ice cream shop and wow what an ice cream! there were plenty of flavours to choose from and the best thing I liked was the variety of prices and sizes! we chose the standard which was £1.60 (if my memory serves me right! including a flake) Ooo and the second best thing was when my daughter couldn't make up her mind which flavour to have the lady said that's ok you can choose two flavours - 1 scoop of each! so I did the same! My daughters had a chocolate scoop and a mint choc chip scoop. I had a coconut scoop and a white chocolate scoop - I didn't want it to end! I also liked the fact they wrapped a serviette around the cone which was fantastic for the girls.
If you want to find the shop for yourself it's opposite the lifeboat place and the building of the homemade ice cream shop is pink!
The sand at Aberdyfi is sandy which is great because in that area many of the beaches are not! I have been told (although we didn't do this ourselves) that if you park near the large hotel on the way out of Aberdyfi towards Tywyn, you can walk across the golf pitch to the beach there and it's lovely although I would imagine it's a small trek!
We tried the fish and chip shop at Aberdyfi, it was nice - i wouldn't say it was anything special but we enjoyed our fish and chips on the beach all the same.
If you have the time to go across to the other side of the estuary - a place called Ynylas it has a lovely view of Aberdyfi - you can look across and see where you've been.
We also went in the cafe called Medina it was lovely, it's a little small inside, we sat upstairs which itself only seated about 10 people. But the drinks were gorgeous, our girls and I had a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows - wow it looked and tasted delicious. My hubby had a latte and that looked and tasted fab too! I don't know how they did it but it arrived separated into two colours so it looked really good in a clear glass. Medina was also opposite the lifeboat place, there is a zebra crossing and literally if you cross that go straight ahead down a tiny little alleyway!
I really liked Aberdyfi it's a pretty sea side town, it's not large at all, it just nestles into the mountainside around the edge of the estuary. Other close places to visit are Tywyn & Fairbourne and the Tallylyn Lake is a definite while you are in the area.
Summary: A beautiful seaside town a must visit

- 20/08/09 I once walked from Aberydyfi to Tywyn with a 2 year old on my shoulders! It was lovely but agony! I really recommend it - but don't carry children. |
