Advantages: Small town, quaint and historical

Disadvantages: Lack of facilities although close to larger towns

Auchtermuchty is a small town in the Howe of Fife. Really not much more than a village but it was granted the status of a ''Royal Burgh'' the 16th century so is officially a town! The town therefore is very old and has a reasonably rich history.

Until recently, Auchtermuchty was a thriving town with many small industries however many of these businesses closed their doors in the 80's and 90's so 'Muchty has less business now with most residents commuting to larger towns and cities nearby for work. There is a primary school but older children travel to high school in nearby Cupar (9 miles). Less shops than there once was but most things you would need are here - large grocers/mini supermarket, newsagents, chemist, tea room, petrol station, two pubs and even a charity shop! There is also a bank although it's only machines most of the time now but there is a Police Station. There are many groups for social activities such as the brownies and cubs for children and the WRI, etc. There are many halls which events are held in and the Community Centre which also has a cafe and is home to groups such as toddlers, playgroup, etc.

'Muchty is most famous these days for the annual festival held each August - many local village type events such as yard of ale, pram race, dances, drives, etc then a weekend of traditional music and song which attracts many visitors from far and wide each year.

As the town is in such a rural area, it benefits from the beauty of the surrounding countryside with many lovely walks including the nearby Common and Forestry. It's also ideally situated for travel to other towns - approximately 16 miles from both Perth and Kirkcaldy, 9 miles to Cupar and Glenrothes, 16 to St Andrews and a quick 40 miles to Edinburgh.

Summary: A lovely town with lots going on - great location and gorgeous countryside.
